Last In Her Class
by Sergio Estavia
The room was hot…hot and dark. Eric laid in the bed, not certain if he was either paralyzed or just seized with fear, awake or dreaming. His mobility was limited but he managed to look around. Turning his head from side to side he saw shadows of bedroom furniture and other fixtures, none of them his. He tried to speak but nothing came out, he tried moving his other limbs but that worked to no avail. It was safe to assume that, yes, he was paralyzed. From what he did not know.
Without options, he resigned to just laying there and tried not to panic. He managed to contain his breathing and after a while his vision started to clear up. Again, he tried to look around the room. This time he saw posters, a small TV, pictures, women's clothes sprawled on the floor and a bookcase filled with movies.
College dorm, he thought. A woman’s room to be exact.
He also started to notice a nasty taste in his mouth, a mixture of medicine and alcohol. He started to focus on one of the posters on the wall. It had a kitten trying to climb out of a lake, the message below it said "keep trying, never give up".
Eric felt a pain in his neck, like he had been stabbed with a sharp point.
His concentration on the poster was broken when the door opened. A young woman entered. She had on white medical scrubs, a pair of black thick framed glasses sat on top of her slender nose.
She walked over and hovered above him, smiling.
“You drank your own date rape drug, asshole,” she said.
Her eyebrows never moved when she spoke..
“You were so wasted you drank both our beers and passed out --- lucky for you I'm a Med student…and a concerned citizen,” she continued, slipping on a pair of medical gloves from her pocket.
“Finals are next week. Professor says that I have to work on my incisions…that my hands are too shaky.”
In her right hand, something gleamed in the moonlight --- a blade. It was long and exact. Sharp.
“I should have graduated by now…probably one of the worst students he has ever seen.” She lowered the blade to his chest and started cutting slowly.
“Don't worry, sugah, once the medication wears off…you'll feel everything.”
