M. Shaw Two SensesM. Shaw is a title inherited by each successive owner of a certain bicycle made in Germany in the early 1930's, originally purchased by a Jewish doctor in Berlin as a birthday resent for his son. Only the first three M. Shaws' original names are known to public record, those being the members of the doctor's family who appropriated the bicycle according to their needs at certain times. The fourth through seventh (current) M. Shaws are untraceable, beginning with the theft of the bicycle from the doctor's brother-in-law's apartment in Lima, Ohio. No scientific explanation has been found for the strange behavior that simply owning the bicycle gives rise to, among which are minor pyromania, liking durian, and requesting to be refered to with the pronoun "it." Narratologists assert that the bicycle is rather a stylistic element, a sort of crude metaphor for the absurd, inexplicable, arbitrary turns of fate that the M. Shaws have no choice but to embrace for the sake of their own survival. Atheists assert that it's just a fucking bicycle and the world would be a much better place without M. Shaw. There's no reason why they can't both be right. |
